Formula feeding is a valid, loving choice โ whether by necessity or preference. But walking into a pharmacy or store and facing 20 different formula tins is overwhelming. Here's the practical guide I give parents at my clinic.
Understanding Formula Stages
- โStage 1 (0โ6 months): Closest to breast milk. Higher whey protein. Use from birth if formula-feeding.
- โStage 2 (6โ12 months): Higher casein protein, more iron. For after solids are introduced.
- โStage 3 (12โ24 months / Toddler): Not technically necessary โ full-fat cow's milk works fine after 1 year.
- โSpecialised formulas: For premature babies (high calorie), lactose intolerance (soy or lactose-free), reflux (AR/comfort formulas), cow's milk protein allergy (extensively hydrolysed or amino acid formulas). These need medical guidance.
Reading the Label
Look for: DHA/ARA (brain development), prebiotics (gut health), iron (15mg/L minimum in Stage 1). Avoid formulas with added sugars (sucrose, glucose syrup) as the first ingredient after lactose. All formulas sold in India must meet FSSAI standards โ so any brand from a reputable retailer is safe.

Switching Formulas
If switching brands (not stages), you can switch directly โ no need to gradually mix. If switching stages, some parents prefer a gradual transition (75% old + 25% new for a few days) to avoid digestive upset, though it's not medically required.
Never dilute formula to make it last longer. Incorrect preparation is dangerous. Always follow the scoop-to-water ratio exactly as printed.
