Sleep training is one of the most debated topics in parenting. Every method has passionate advocates and critics. The truth? There is no single right answer โ the best method is the one that fits your baby's temperament, your family's values, and that you can implement consistently.
When Can You Start Sleep Training?
Most pediatric sleep experts recommend waiting until 4โ6 months, when babies have the neurological maturity to self-soothe and can go longer stretches without feeding. Before 4 months, night waking is developmentally normal and necessary for nutrition.
The Cry It Out (CIO) / Extinction Method
You put baby down drowsy but awake, say goodnight, and don't return until morning (or a set time). Baby cries until they fall asleep independently. This is the fastest method โ most babies adapt in 3โ7 nights.
Research (including a 2016 study in Pediatrics) shows CIO does not cause psychological harm or attachment issues when done at the right developmental stage.
The Ferber Method (Graduated Extinction)
You return to comfort baby at increasing intervals โ first after 3 minutes of crying, then 5, then 10. Each night you extend the intervals. You do NOT pick baby up โ just brief verbal and physical reassurance. Takes 1โ2 weeks. Slightly gentler than full extinction for parents.
The No-Cry Sleep Solution
Developed by Elizabeth Pantley. You gradually wean baby off sleep associations (nursing/rocking to sleep) by removing the association just before they're fully asleep. Very gentle, but takes 4โ8 weeks and requires significant consistency.
๐ก Laxons Baby World Recommends
Fisher-Price Sound Machine (โน1,499) โ white noise mimics the womb environment and dramatically reduces night waking during sleep training. Use 65โ70 dB (as loud as a shower) in the first few months.
Gentle Fading / Chair Method
You sit in a chair next to the crib until baby sleeps. Every 2โ3 nights you move the chair further from the crib until you're outside the room. Moderate timeline (2โ3 weeks). Good for babies who are more sensitive and for parents who find CIO too distressing.
Which Method Is Right for You?
- โ0โ4 months โ No sleep training. Focus on a consistent pre-sleep routine instead.
- โ4โ6 months, sensitive temperament โ Gentle fading or No-Cry Solution.
- โ6+ months, parents exhausted โ Ferber or CIO will get results fastest.
- โAny age, any method โ Consistency is more important than which method you choose.
