Co-sleeping is the norm for the vast majority of Indian families β culturally, practically, and emotionally. Western guidelines often present a stark 'safe crib only' message that doesn't reflect the reality of most Indian homes. Here's an honest, evidence-based look at how to co-sleep as safely as possible if that's your choice.
Room Sharing vs Bed Sharing
Room sharing (baby in their own sleep space in your room) reduces SIDS risk by up to 50% versus sleeping in a separate room. This is where Western guidelines and Indian practice can find common ground β baby close, but on their own surface. Bed sharing carries more risk, but risk can be significantly reduced.
The SAFE Sleep Framework for Co-Sleeping
- βS β Sober: No alcohol, sedating medications, or recreational drugs for any bedsharing adult
- βA β Aware: Baby should be between mother (not partner) and the bed edge, or on the outer edge with a bed rail
- βF β Firm surface: No waterbeds, pillowtops, or very soft mattresses. Remove pillows and duvets near baby.
- βE β Exclusively breastfed: Research shows breastfeeding mothers naturally adopt a protective C-curl position around baby during sleep
NEVER bedshare on a sofa or armchair β this increases SIDS risk significantly. A firm mattress on the floor is safer than a plush mattress on a high bed.
When Bed Sharing Is Not Safe
- βBaby is under 4 months (higher SIDS risk period)
- βBaby was premature or low birth weight
- βAny adult in the bed smokes (even if not in bed)
- βYou are obese (sleep position may be harder to control)
- βYou have taken any alcohol or sedating medication
